We have chosen to support organizations providing
the immigrant population of Portland with:
Welcome, Education, and Community.

ShifaME at Spurwink provides culturally appropriate services for refugee and immigrant youth and their families in Maine, with programs starting in Lewiston, Biddeford, and Greater Portland. ShifaME’s Multicultural Care Coordinators partner with youth and families, natural supports, and service providers in the home, school, and community to reduce barriers that face refugee, asylee, and immigrant families. ShifaME counseling is a service for children and families who have experienced trauma or severe stress associated with being a refugee, asylee, or immigrant. This includes stress related to trauma, acculturation, resettlement, or isolation. The model for treatment is Trauma Systems Therapy adapted for Refugees (TST-R).

The Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project (ILAP) is Maine’s only comprehensive state-wide immigration legal services organization, with offices in Portland and Lewiston and a reach across the state through a network of community-based partners and service providers. ILAP advises and represents low-income clients in complex immigration cases where they would likely be unsuccessful without a costly private attorney. In addition, ILAP staff provides education and outreach on a full spectrum of immigration issues, and advocate for policies that support and defend our immigrant neighbors locally and nationally.

the telling room.png

The Telling Room empowers youth through writing and sharing their voices with the world. Focused on young writers ages 6 to 18, they seek to build confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and provide real audiences for students. They believe that the power of creative expression can change communities and prepare local youth for future success. They serve those who are reluctant to write as well as those who already identify as writers, including: children and young adults who are a part of Maine’s growing community of immigrants and refugees, those with emotional and behavioral challenges, students struggling in mainstream classrooms, homeschoolers enthusiastic to join a creative community, LBGTQ youth, and passionate young writers who need additional support beyond what their schools are able to provide.
